WisconsinEye Senior Producer Steven Walters conducted a Media at Work interview with Marty Kaiser, president of the American Society of News Editors, editor of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and winner of Editor and Publisher magazine's "Editor of the Year" award, on October 9 at Journal Sentinel offices in Milwaukee. The interview covered the critical challenges facing the newspaper industry, the industry's future, the need for professional reporting that provides a check on government programs and elected officials, and Kaiser's belief that newspaper editors and publishers were too complacent in the 1990s.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Assistant Managing Editor of Projects and Investigations Mark Katches discussed the newspaper's "Wasted in Wisconsin" series, examining drinking culture in the state, with WisconsinEye Public Policy Producer Craig Sauer on January 20, 2008. Katches talked about how the project was developed, key findings, the presentation of the series in the newspaper and the response it received. Journalist Andy Hall, the executive director of the new Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism, discussed the nonprofit organization's goals and role in the present media lanscape with WisconsinEye Public Policy Producer Craig Sauer. The Madison-based center expects to partner with Wisconsin Public Radio, Wisconsin Public Television and the UW-Madison School of Journalism and Mass Communication to provide free content about government ethics, neighborhood safety, water quality and other issues to news media in the state. The interview with Hall took place in WisconsinEye's Madision Studio on January 19, 2009.

WisconsinEye visited the Pabst Theater to tape a remote broadcast of "Lake Effect," hosted by Mitch Teich on WUWM, Milwaukee Public Radio. His scheduled guests were Dr. Edith Burns, Associate Professor of Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin; Dr. George M. Lange, MD, FACP, an Internal Medicine physician at Columbia St. Mary's; Lori Kuban, an inspirational speaker, educator, and consultant, who is also a brain cancer survivor; Dr. Edmund Duthie, Jr., Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Geriatrics/Gerontology at the Medical College of Wisconsin; Bhrigu (Rishi) Parmar, gerontology student at the Medical College of Wisconsin; and Frank Bever, a Standardized Patient with the Medical College of Wisconsin's Objective Structured Clinical Examinations. The show took place on November 19, 2008, from 10am-11am.

WisconsinEye joined Joy Cardin in Madison Wisconsin as part of Wisconsin Public Radio’s "Joy Ride," a series of broadcasts from different Wisconsin communities featuring talk about the latest political news with local guest experts. In the first hour, Joy spends time celebrating your Wisconsin identity with guests from Sconnine Nation, a business that makes t-shirts and such for sale. Troy Vosseller, co-founder of Sconnie Nation, and Issac Lenz, manager of the Sconnie Nation store in Madison tell Joy about what it means to be “Sconnie.” In the second hour, Joy visits with Charles Franklin, UW-Madison Political Scientist where they discuss the Vice Presidential debate. And in the third hour, Joy visits with guests Ed Garvey, Senior Partner of Garvey, McNeil, and McGillivray and publisher at FightingBob.com, and Rick Berg, board member of Wisconsin Common Cause and a former appointee of the Thompson administration.

As part of our Media at Work series, WisconsinEye spent part of a day with John Powell as he reported on the 2008 EAA AirVenture air show for Wisconsin Public Radio. The Experimental Aircraft Association's Fly-In Convention, now known as EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, has been in existence since it’s first gathering in September 1953 in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Today, EAA AirVenture Oshkosh is an international gathering place for aviation enthusiasts, where participant can study the latest aircraft and innovations; discover new ideas and techniques from the more than 500 forums and workshops; see aviation's top personalities; or just talk airplanes with people from around the world.

The Barron County Fair held their annual Jr. Livestock Sale on July 19th, once again with record prices.  AM 1240 WJMC Radio broadcasts the event every year.  WJMC Morning show host Don Tobias and Barron High School Agricultural Education Instructor Keith Kolpack provided radio listeners with information about the sale and the 4-H and FFA members that participated.  Prior to the start of the sale special recognition was given to people that help make the sale possible, as well as graduating junior exhibitors.
